Hiking the Dolomite Spires of Juta & Chaukhi Pass
Written by Lasha Tsiklauri (UIAGM Mountain Guide)
Nestled just 24 kilometers southeast of Stepantsminda, Juta is one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in Europe at 2,200 meters. As you hike past the wooden chalets of Zeta Camp, the imposing serrated wall of the Chaukhi massif (3,842m) suddenly opens into view.
The trail meanders alongside rushing glacial streams toward the Chaukhi Lake, where the reflection of vertical limestone towers shimmers in turquoise water. For seasoned mountaineers, pushing onward over the 3,338-meter Sadzele Pass reveals the wild, untouched amphitheater of the Roshka Valley and the colorful Abudelauri Lakes.
Best time to trek: Late June through mid-October. Pack waterproof layers, sturdy ankle-support boots, and stop by Fifth Season terrace for hot herbal mountain tea.
